According to the most recent UIS data, there are an estimated 774 million illiterate adults in the world, about 64% of whom are women.

The UIS regularly collects literacy data worldwide and updates related statistics and estimates twice a year, in April and September. The statistics - produced for youth, adult and other selected age groups - are available for most countries. To view the most recent tables, visit the Data Centre or gain a more historical perspective by accessing the archives.
