The UIS is a key player in the global "Millennium Development Goals" initiative. As part of this, it is the lead agency for the collection of data and indicators for Goals 2 & 3 - Universal Primary Education and Gender Equality.
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education Target 3: Ensure that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women Target 4: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015.

The UNESCO Institute for Statistics provides key data on universal primary education and gender equality for the monitoring of the Millennium Development Goals.
