This table provides a summary presentation of selected elements of
national education systems. The information given here is intended to facilitate the
correct interpretation of the figures shown in Tables 3.2 to 3.8.
The first two columns provide data on compulsory education regulations. The first column shows lower and upper age limits. Thus 6-14, for example, means that children are subject to compulsory education laws, unless exempted, from their sixth to their fourteenth birthday. The second column shows the number of years of compulsory school attendance. For example, regulations may stipulate that the duration of compulsory education shall be six years of schooling between the ages of 6 and 14. This means that a child ceases to be subject to the regulations either on his fourteenth birthday or on completion of six years of schooling (though he might then be only 12 or 13 years old). The third column gives the age at which children are accepted for preprimary education which for most countries is still provided on a limited basis, often restricted to urban areas. The coloured shading in the last columns indicates the duration of and age of admission into first level and second level general education according to the education system presently in force. Information on teacher training and technical and vocational education at the second level is not presented. The blue shading represents the duration of first level education, red the duration of the first stage of second level general education and green the duration of the second stage of second level general education. It should be noted that some countries and territories make no distinction between the two stages of second level general education, in which case the duration is shown in yellow. For a certain number of countries the entrance age and duration of education at these two levels vary according to the area or type of schools. The most common system is shown in this table. Table 3.1A indicates the other existing possibilities and Table 3.1B shows any changes in the education system which have occurred since 1980. Les renseignements concernant lenseignement normal et lenseignement technique et professionnel du second degré ne sont pas présentés.
