Education

The UIS annual education data collection is the most comprehensive in the world. It covers all education levels and a range of issues, such as gender parity, teachers and financing.

The data are collected through three surveys, which are based on similar definitions and concepts to ensure the international comparability of the data. The three surveys include:

  • the UIS education survey: the Institute collects education data annually from 162 countries through three questionnaires (posted below);
  • World Education Indicators survey: the UIS collects education data annually from 15 countries through seven questionnaires (posted below); and
  • the UIS, OECD and Eurostat data collection: 46 countries participate in this annual survey, which is administered jointly by the UIS, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat).

The UIS also conducts special data collections to better respond to the specific monitoring needs of certain regions. For example, the UIS has developed a regional questionnaire for sub-Saharan Africa which focuses teacher training and schooling conditions, for example, which includes access to drinking water and toilets for girls.
