The 2006 Digest presents education statistics from primary to tertiary levels in more than 200 countries for the school year ending in 2004. It includes a wide range of indicators which can be used to assess progress towards Education for All and Millennium Development Goals.
New indicators in this edition enable readers to track the flows of foreign or mobile students. Mobile students are defined as those who study in a foreign country of which they are not a permanent resident.
Tertiary students from sub-Saharan Africa are the most mobile in the world, with one out of every 16 – or 5.6 % - studying abroad, according to the Digest. At the other end of the scale, only one out of every 250 North American students (0.4%) studies overseas, making this group the least mobile.
