Hendrik van der Pol, UIS Director 


Born in the Netherlands, Mr Hendrik van der Pol holds a degree in human geography and a doctorate in demography. Over the past 25 years, he has worked on the collection and analysis of data from censuses, surveys and vital registration systems in various duty stations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Southeast Europe. His career path has provided him with valuable multicultural experience, as well as in-depth knowledge of the use of quantitative methods in policy development, particularly in developing countries.


Mr van der Pol held the post of Director of SNV, a Dutch development organization, in Albania (1993-1997) and Bolivia (1997-2000). From 2000 to 2004, he was the representative for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Guatemala, where he led the Guatemala 2002 population and housing census. Mr van der Pol also guided the promulgation of the Law on Social Development in 2001 by mediating a consensus among the government, congress and leading civil society groups. Between 2004 and 2006, he was the UNFPA representative in India and Bhutan, managing seven of the organization's offices.


In April 2006, Mr van der Pol was appointed the Director of the UIS in Montreal. Mr van der Pol has published various works on population statistics, demography, migration and reproductive health. He is a member of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, the International Statistical Institution, the Advisory Council to the Education Policy and Data Centre, and the Canadian Cultural Observatory Advisory Council.
